35 carbs

October 5th, 2004

The carb total for today is 35. I had no breakfast, ate a turkey sandwich for lunch, and had taco meat and cheese for supper. I think I’ll weigh myself on Thursday morning to see what kind of progress I’ve made.

At 6:30 tonight we played against one of the best teams in the league, Demo’s. We played pretty well and actually led for a little bit, but they came back, and we went to extra innings, where we eventually lost in the ninth by a score of 20-11, thanks to their nine-run ninth inning. It was tough because it was one of those games where we could have definitely won, and it was against one of the top teams in the league. I batted two-for-three with a single and triple, along with two walks. I believe that brings my average up to .541 for the year.

On Thursday we play the Killer Beez, which is a team comprised of several cousins of ours and also some friends. It should be fun! We’re both 1-3 in the league, so it’s an important game.

In other news, I am excited. I recently spotted a yard sign at a four-way intersection a few miles from our home. The sign was advertising wireless broadband Internet service. Being out in the country, cable and DSL are not options, and since we’ve been out here we’ve been stuck with Direcway, a satellite Internet service. Unforunately, it’s very unreliable, with lots of intermittent outages, the speed isn’t terrific (it’s decent, but not outstanding), but the main downside of it is caused by the very nature of the system — the dish communicates with a satellite some 23,000 miles away, and that takes time. Practically speaking, this means that there is an ever-present lag or delay in the Internet, even though it’s just a one- or two-second delay. This isn’t a big deal for e-mail or chatting, but it is very much noticeable when surfing websites, and it makes online gaming nearly impossible — except for simple games, such as Yahoo! Games or MSN Zone.

Anyway… I end up calling this wireless ISP that was advertised on the sign, and the person I talked to is familiar with our area and said it might be available and that they would send someone out to check. So within a few days we should find out whether this area is serviceable. If it is, then that would be awesome news. But I’m trying not to get too excited, because I’ve had other times where I thought we would be able to get a different service but to no avail. I’ll make sure I mention it once I find out if we qualify!
