Hubba-hubba

February 2nd, 2005

This was written on Tuesday night. Entry was delayed due to Internet woes.

This afternoon, the 24-port hub that I purchased on eBay arrived. I wasted no time in opening it up and installing it in the basement where all of the phone, network and cable wires run. In minutes, we were up and running at 100 megabits per second, and now we have all the computers (and Xboxes) plugged into one hub. More speed, less mess.

From reading this first paragraph, I bet it’s not sounding like I lead a very exciting life. But, really, this is a good thing about the hub! Now our network is much faster, and we have the flexibility of hooking up a computer to virtually anywhere in our house, since we have plenty of open ports on the hub.

Aside from the “normal” work and responsibilities of the day, I really didn’t do a whole lot. In the evening, I watched most of the Illinois/Michigan State game. Illinois won again, with something like a 15-point margin of victory.

I’ve been looking into a few computer components lately — namely, motherboards, cases and, just recently, memory (RAM). My computer is about two years old, and yet it’s still performing very well. It’s a Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz processor with 756 MB of RAM and about 300 GB of hard drive space. That’s still respectable, even by today’s standards. Anyway, I’m just casually looking into motherboards, since that is one weak aspect of my computer. The motherboard, by the way, is essentially where everything plugs in and gets connected to. It’s the big board that has wires running out to your drives, has slots for your sound card, video card, modem, network card — it’s the main thing, hence its name. I would like to buy a new one, but I’m just not sure if I could justify it. Because if I got a new motherboard, it may mean I should get a new case. I do think it would be fun to basically take my computer apart and attempt to put it all back together. I suppose I could go do that now with my current motherboard and case, but it’s not as exciting.

The idea of getting more memory is dying fast. I checked prices of memory, and a 1 GB stick of DDR ram (the type my computer would use) is going for like $160! I had no idea that the prices were that high. I guess I’ll just have to be content with my 756 megabytes of RAM. They do a pretty good job, I have to say.

Well, I’m going to end all this tech talk and go get some sleep. I’m sure this wasn’t one of my more entertaining journal entries, but it is what it is. Tomorrow, I may be getting a haircut. So stay tuned for that compelling story!
