The month that was: January 2005

February 1st, 2005

This month has been one full of twists, turns, ups and downs.

We started the month on a very disappointing note, learning about some friends of ours getting in a terrible car accident. We were overjoyed to hear the great improvements that Jessica had been making in her recovery. We were heartbroken to learn that Elizabeth had passed away.

This month, we were contacted by the Montel Show and spent hours with a videographer here at our house, taping for what appears to be an upcoming episode of the show.

In January, the family went on an eight-day trip to the northeast. We visited Boston and Niagara Falls. The whole trip was an adventure in and of itself, with many stories and anecdotes. A flat tire a mile away from the Canadian border? An expedited tripod purchase in Boston? Playing a computer game wirelessly between two cars while on the highway? It all happened. We took many photos, hours of videos, and had a great time.

Also happening were two unexpected hospital visits for my mom. One stay was three days long; the other just a day. We watched and prayed as Mom steadily improved and continues to do so. We thank God for that.

So it really has been a packed month. One thing I’ve been learning more and more to do is to simply trust God for everything and to live life a day at a time. So much is beyond my control, and I have no way of even knowing if I’ll be here tomorrow, next month or next year. I have plenty of things I would love to do someday, if God wills it. If not, though, I’ve learned enough times that He knows better than I do.

Psalm 37:4:

“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

I’ve realized how true this is, as so many times I’ll be absolutely sure of something that I want to have happen, want to do, want to become, and then I’ll find that idea dies off. But I believe that God — the one who created me and knows me better than I know myself — He knows what would be perfect for me! It’s really amazing and very humbling to realize that.
