Way to go!

June 29th, 2005

Many congratulations are in order for my brother John, who just received the results of the May 2005 registered professional reporter test! Check out http://www.ncraonline.org/education/certification/testing/results/2005/0505_rpr.shtml and scroll down to “Illinois.”

John passed the ever-so-difficult RPR test and will soon be reporting depositions! I hope to be there myself within a few years, though I know it’s extremely difficult to pass the test. His hard work and dedication to practicing and speed-building have paid huge dividends. Way to go, bro!

Rain, rain, rain!

June 28th, 2005

Oh, how I love rain!

Tonight it poured for about an hour, and we sure needed it. Belleville and the surrounding cities have had a boil order since Sunday, which means it’s been impossible to get a cold fountain soda. Well, I have personally missed the cold fountain sodas, so I’m hoping this rain will enable the water companies to lift the boil order, thus allowing sodas to be made. :-)

I am, however, extremely grateful that we are on a well. A very nice well, at that. It provides us with all the water we could use and then some! Plus, once it’s through our purification system, it’s the most delicious drinking water. Seriously, it’s the best. =)

Well, I spent several hours today working at the house of a couple that my grandma knows. They needed some help in setting up their computer and home theater system, and Grandma sent them my way. Initially, I thought I was just going over there to set up a computer — you know, plug in a few wires, position the monitor and speakers and be on my way! Little did I know that they had a home theater system they wanted me to set up, which consisted of a TV, a satellite receiver, a VCR, a DVD player and a surround-sound receiver with five speakers and a subwoofer. Yikes. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve never set up surround sound before. Connecting the speakers to the receiver was fairly easy; the difficult times came when, for some reason, sound wouldn’t come out of the back two speakers. It’s still a little baffling. I wonder, though — does anybody know anything about home theater setups? If so, e-mail me. I’m wondering if I needed to use a different cable to hook the receiver up to the TV. See, I’m good with the video aspect of things, but I’ve just never done that much with the audio side, especially when it comes to surround sound.

Anyway, I spent nearly five hours at this couple’s house, and by the time I got home it was suppertime. So I ate, watched some baseball, took care of a few things here at home and then took off for our 7:30 game. We won the game by a score of 10-6, I believe. I batted 0-1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. I’ve been walking quite a bit lately! I think that’s a good sign, because it means I’m being more selective and not swinging at bad pitches.

4-4

June 27th, 2005

Hey, good stuff. Tonight I batted 4-4 with an inside-the-park home run. That raises my batting average to .505 for the season, and it’s the first time in quite a while that I’ve been above the .500 mark. It’s a good feeling! Oh, yes, we won. =)

So… what else to write? It’s been really hot here lately. Hot and dry. We’re supposed to hit 99 degrees on Wednesday. Yup, very hot.

Man, I want to write about something… yet I can’t. Well, I can, but I won’t. Knowing that everyone and their mother could be reading this at any given time makes me want to exercise extra caution. So, I’ll keep these thoughts and ideas between me and my awesome God. I trust that He’s our provider, and He knows exactly what His children need and when they need it. So I’m trusting Him to take care of things!

Catching up

June 26th, 2005

Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve made an entry. We’ve been pretty busy lately, and the whole family has been dealing with the heartbreak associated with Mom’s recent miscarriage.

Mom seems to be doing pretty well physically, and God has given our family peace throughout this really difficult time. The pain is still there, but it’s just so comforting to know that we have an awesome God who is above this all, even in rocky times such as this. With that said, let me run through the past few days real quick.

On Friday afternoon, the new LCD screen arrived in the mail. I excitedly opened up the package, took the broken laptop out of my closet and went to work. It took a good 30 minutes or so, but I ended up getting the screen installed, plugged in, screwed in, put the front bezel back on, put the battery in. Now was the moment of truth! Time to press the power button. Would the screen flicker on? Or did I just waste 200 bucks?

James did the honor of pressing the power button, and the LCD screen promptly lit up, brightly and crisply displaying the “HP” logo, the BIOS and then the Windows 98 start-up screen. All right! That was such a satisfying feeling. After all of this, the screen repair only cost $200, when it could have easily cost $600 or $700. Thank the Lord! I’m just really happy I was able to do the repair myself. There’s such great satisfaction in saving a boat-load of dough by doing someething like that.

On Saturday, I spent several hours walking around the first floor with a can of paint and a brush. My task was to touch up various spots on the interior walls. I spent several hours moving from room to room, and I ended up finishing the entire first floor. Phew! We’ve got a large first floor; I’ll tell ya. I also plan to take care of the second floor and the attic, so I will probably conquer those in the coming days.

We’re doing various projects and improvements as we prepare for the 4th of July party that we’re hosting. So far we have: been staining the back yard fence, installing a dropped ceiling in the basement, putting ceramic tile down in the basement, touching up various areas on the first floor, and… I think that’s about it. We also plan to stain the lattice work under the front porch, so we’ll probably tackle that this week as well.

On to Sunday. This morning, our family went over to the Shrine in Belleville for a brunch. We were celebrating Grandma and Grandpa Arndt’s 50th wedding anniversary, and we met up with our aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. After we ate, Paul set up a projector and played a picture slideshow he put together, showing photos from when Grandma and Grandpa were babies, through their childhoods, through high school, into their marriage and then their kids and the kids’ families. The slideshow turned out wonderfully! He created it on the computer, added music to the pictures and burned the entire project to DVDs. It turned out very well.

Oh, yes. The food at the Shrine’s brunch buffet wasn’t half-bad, either. They had everything from breakfast foods (pancakes, French toast, bacon, sausage, eggs, Belgian waffles) to fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, to fruits, to desserts, to… well, you get the picture. There was quite a spread! It was mighty tasty. We had a fun time talking to Grandma, Grandpa, some aunts and uncles and other folks that we don’t get to see nearly as often. It was nice to get to know them a little better.

And now, here I am, typing on this laptop with its beautiful, crisp 15.4-inch screen. I’m liking it! The only downside, in my opinion, is the laptop’s size. If I were to go out and buy a laptop brand new, I might opt for a lighter/thinner one with, say, a 14-inch screen. But this guy does pretty well, and, I’ve got to admit, the 15.4-inch screen is very nice.

Well, that does it! I’m watching the ened of the Pirates/Cardinals game on TV. Cards are down 5-4 in the 10th with runners on first and second and one out. Who’s batting now? Oh, it’s John Mabry. Let’s get a hit!!

LCD screen and softball

June 23rd, 2005

I just wanted to give a quick update on the other things going on here.

Unfortunately, the LCD screen didn’t arrive today. Hopefully tomorrow!

We played at 6:30 softball game today in the 96-degree heat. Phase II jumped in front of us and led 8-3 after the first two innings, but we chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the game and then going up 10-9. We managed to hold on for a victory. I batted 2-2 with two sacrifice flies, a single and a double.

Miscarriage

June 23rd, 2005

It appears that Mom is miscarrying the baby. It’s heartbreaking news, but I just remind myself of Psalm 84:10: “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere…” Just another reason to look forward to heaven, to meet up with the little guy/girl. :-) It’s still really devastating, but God is definitely in control.

Please keep Mom in your prayers, as well as the rest of the family. I am amazed at how courageous my mom is, but I know she is very upset over this. Just pray that God would heal her physically and emotionally, and that He would just give everyone an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing that this little life is now safe with Him. Thanks.

My hope is in You, God!

June 23rd, 2005

By Third Day

To you, O Lord, I lift my soul

In you, O God, I place my trust

Do not let me be put to shame

Nor let my enemies triumph over me

My hope is you

Show me your ways

Guide me in truth

In all my days

My hope is you

I am, O Lord, filled with your love

You are, O God, my salvation

Guard my life and rescue me

My broken spirit shouts

My mended heart cries out

My hope is you

Show me your ways

Guide me in truth

In all my days

My hope is you

Another Arndt!

June 22nd, 2005

Well, it’s official. Mom is expecting another baby!!! We are all very excited about the idea of having another chub in the family! Please keep Mom and the new baby in your prayers, that God would protect both of them throughout this pregnancy. The last two pregnancies have ended in a miscarriage, and those were really heartbreaking. But it’s definitely exciting to know that there’s a little life there right now. From here, all we can do is pray for the pregnancy and trust our awesome God to take care of the situation.

Photo Of The Day on UPI.comWe made UPI.com’s Photo Of The Day several days back. Pretty neat, huh?

By the way, I am getting very antsy. The LCD screen should arrive sometime tomorrow, and I am sure hoping it’s the correct screen. If not, what do I do? I guess I’d try to sell it on eBay. I touched on this earlier, but the way the screens work is confusing. The original screen for the laptop is a Samsung LTN154X1-L02. The one I purchased for $200 is a LTN154X1-L01. Some people have said the suffix (L01 versus L02) will make no difference; others have said that you need the exact same number as the original screen. I certainly don’t have enough experience in this area, so I’m taking a gamble with buying the L01 screen. The moment of truth will probably be sometime tomorrow, when I receive the screen and install it. Hopefully it will light up bright and clear!! I’ll let you know.

Double-header

June 22nd, 2005

Evidently, we had a double-header tonight! We played at 9:30 tonight and then had a makeup game immediately after, at 10:30. We lost the first game 11-2 but won the second 13-3. I batted something like 3-7 overall. Not terribly impressive, but I had some hard hits, one of which ended up being an three-run inside-the-park homer.

I spent a lot of time today editing the Safe At Home Show. I typically do that on Wednesdays, but I wanted to get a jump on things and try to have it done earlier. Plus, I’m doing a few different things to the show this week, and that adds extra time during the “rendering” process.

The past couple of days, Paul and Grandpa Arndt have been working in the basement, putting up metal brackets and strips of wood in preparation for our dropped ceiling. They seem to have made a lot of progress and are anxious to get back to the project. We also have ordered some carpet from Lowe’s, so we plan on installing that in the near future. This is exciting stuff!

I do have some very special news, but I will save it for another day since it’s already very late.

Farmer Luke

June 20th, 2005

I spent a few hours today mowing our grass with a tractor. I never realized just how much grass we have! It took a good three, three-and-a-half hours for me to complete everything. Thankfully, we don’t have to push-mow the grass! That would be quite a task. On Saturday evening, I was all decked out with my dress slacks, shoes, snazzy shirt, tie and boutonniere, and by Monday morning I was chugging around on the tractor. I’m versatile! :-)

This evening, we got back on the winning track as we beat D.J.’s Longballs by a score of 9-5. was 1-3 with a walk, but I hit the ball really well. In fact, my last out was a line drive to right field that I couldn’t have hit much better. It just happened to be caught. So I have no cause for concern.

Oh, this morning I bought a replacement LCD screen for Dad’s old laptop. At least, I think it’s the correct screen. See, the way the model numbers work is a bit confusing. But I think this particular screen will do the trick. At any rate, I bought it for a song off of eBay. It was a $200 song, but that is a steal compared to any other place. And to ship the laptop off to get the screen replaced would cost a mint! I don’t know how many hundreds of dollars this would save, but I know it would be awesome if this screen does the trick! I removed the cracked one, and the new one should be arriving later this week. I sure hope it works!! I’d be absolutely thrilled. =)
