May sure didn’t last very long, did it?

I had two very different tasks today. One was completing the work on our pond, removing the scum, muck, and all sorts of unpleasant stuff that grew and lived on the water and around the perimeter. Mark and I spearheaded the task, and today we brought it to completion. Our pond is attractive again. Now we just need to figure out how to keep it that way. We’ve been researching different chemicals that might kill or prevent the weeds/scum from growing.

My second task of the day was continuing work on a brand-new website that I’m putting together. This one is for the Softball Classic, which is scheduled to take place on August 26th and 27th of this year at Laderman Park in Belleville. So far, we have three Cardinals players lined up for the two-day event: Jeff Suppan, John Rodriguez, and Adam Wainwright.

The site is nothing terribly fancy, but it should be a good source of information for all things related to the Classic. I’ve spent the last two days working on it, and I have already come a long way. I think I’ll be able to have it up pretty soon.

Sunburned, striking out, and spell-check

May 30th, 2006

So…

As a result of yesterday’s time spent in the pond, I have a pair of sunburned shoulders. The weird thing is, though, I have a spot on my left arm where it’s completely unburned, as if I was wearing an armband or something. Kind of strange. But anyway, it kind of hurts to do much with my shoulders.

Tonight, we played softball. I batted 1-2 with a walk and a… strikeout. Yeah, I struck out. Looking. In slow-pitch softball. That’s… a no-no. Oh, and it doesn’t feel very good, either. But, hey, tonight’s game was a very convenient reminder that it’s just a game we’re playing and that we’re playing to have fun. Although it’s fine to compete, if I can’t have fun when I’m losing or am not doing well, there’s no sense in playing at all. Because tonight, I sure didn’t turn in an MVP performance.

By the way, the next version of Firefox (2.0) looks promising. I’m using a beta version (code-named Bon Echo) here on my laptop, and I just noticed that it has a built-in spell-check feature. So as I type away here in a standard form, Firefox is checking each and every word that I type. Pretty neat stuff.

Memorial Day Weekend

May 29th, 2006

It’s been a really fun weekend. Yesterday was really relaxing, and in the evening I spent some time baby-sitting for the chubs. Nowadays, this mainly consists of following/chasing three-and-a-half-year-old David around, keeping him safe and happy. I took him out to the back yard and pitched him some baseballs. He’s really young, but he has a great swing! In 11 short years, he’ll be eligible to join our softball team. ;-) I also let him play with my miniature pool table, which he asks to use pretty much every time he comes up to my room. He’s a fun chub. :-)

Today, I spent a few hours out in our pond. With all of the warm and sunny weather lately, our pond has produced some unsightly scum/moss/algae. The past week, a bunch of us have been going out to the pond to reclaim the pond, yanking out all of the scum. We’re getting close to having the pond cleaned out. Once we do that, the challenge will be to prevent this stuff from growing in our pond. We’re looking at some solutions, one of which is copper sulfate, that would kill the weeds in the water and prevent them from growing. What a great solution that would be!

As I was swimming across the pond, I realized just how neat it is to have our own pond! And when there isn’t any scum hanging around the perimeter, it just looks beautiful. It’s perfect to swim in, fish in, or canoe in. What a blessing to have that in our own back yard.

Later today, most of the family went over to our Aunt Jane’s house for a Memorial Day party. James and I played a game of Chicago ball with some of our cousins. Other than that, we just had fun interacting with aunts, uncles, and cousins.

That’s all for now. There’s a thing or two I want to write about, but that/those will just have to wait. I’m going to go read my Bible, possibly some more from another book, and then get some sleep.

Softball Tournament - Part II

May 28th, 2006

Today, Paul, Jude, and I continued the softball tournament at Citizen’s Park. We had a 5:00 game against Lumpy’s Lobsters, and we managed to take that by a score of 8-3 thanks in part to an outstanding play by our cousin Dan out in left field. He made a great catch at the warning track, saving us at least two runs.

We kept out tournament hopes alive by winning at 5:00, so we were set to face off against Tiny’s at 9:00. Since we had some time to kill, Paul, Jude, and I met up with Kelly, Jeff, and Dan at Smokey Bones in Fairview Heights. We ate there, then all headed back to the park for the second game.

Our game against Tiny’s started out close. I hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the first inning, and we led 2-0 going into the second. Tiny’s hit really well, though, and ended up coming back a few innings later. We ended up losing to them 11-6, but the game was actually very close.

That loss, being our second, knocked us out of the tourney. So we had a somewhat early exit, but it was a lot of fun. I think we put a pretty good team out there. It’s a shame we couldn’t go deeper into the tournament, but maybe next time! :-)

Softball Tournament

May 27th, 2006

This evening, we played our first game in the Memorial Day weekend softball tournament at Citizen’s Park. Our team, Safe At Home, faced off against J.C. Hauling at 8:00. Paul and Jude are the only other Arndts on the team. The rest are just friends and cousins of ours. The lineup was as follows:

Josh

Kelly

Paul

Luke

Jude

Mark

Rob

Jeff

Sean

Mike

We had a close game, but we lost 15-13 on one of the weirdest plays ever. This is a double-elimination tournament, which means two losses and you’re out. We play tomorrow at 5:00 in the evening as we try to rebound and try to keep our tourney hopes alive.

I’m very, very tired. It’s really late, and all of the softball today — the long practice we had and then the game itself — has drained me pretty good. I think I’ll sleep.

Happy birthday to you!

May 24th, 2006

Yesterday, May 23rd, was my blog’s two-year anniversary. I have amassed 741 entries since May 23rd, 2004, which is averaging slightly more than one per day.

Last night, we won our 6:30 softball game by a score of 8-7. I batted 3-4, and my average has hit .606. It’s going to be very hard to keep it there, but we’ll see what I can do.

This morning, Philip, Seth, and I got up early and went outside to do some running. We jogged a lap around the perimeter of our property, which is roughly a third of a mile, and then we spent some time doing a lot of sprints and drills back on our ballfield. Most of it consisted of sprinting from third to home. After we were finished, we did a second lap around our land and then called it quits. This just in: I don’t like running. :-( I don’t know why it is; perhaps because there’s not much fun associated with it, whereas with playing a sport — even a vigorous one like soccer or basketball — you have a big element of fun while you’re exhausting yourself. With running, though, I just have a real hard time making myself stick with it for any prolonged period of time. :|

Any ideas for ways to make running more enjoyable? Or any good alternatives to running? I think something like DDR is pretty good, but you don’t get to work out the legs the same way as with running, and I also don’t think DDR helps that much as far as endurance goes. The plus for DDR, however, is it happens to be a lot of fun, so it’s easy to lose yourself in it. I suppose that’s my main beef with running — I can’t seem to just lose myself in running, where 15 minutes or a half-hour will pass before I even know it.

Well, time to get some stuff done.

I went to Kansas City on a Friday

May 22nd, 2006

….

By Saturday I learned a thing or two

But up ’till then I didn’t have an idea

Of what the mod’rn world was comin’ to.

….

Anyway! We did go to Kansas City on a Friday. We left around 11:00 in the morning, and we arrived at Kauffman Stadium somewhere around 4:45. Mark and I dropped off Paul and John, and then we headed south on Interstate 435 in order to meet up with Maggie at International House of Prayer. She had told us about IHOP before, and since she happens to be staying there during her internship, we visited her and she gave us a tour of the area. There was the Prayer Room, which has 24/7 worship. After checking that out, we also walked by the cafe and visited the bookstore.

Eventually, we said goodbye to Maggie and headed back to The K (that is, Kauffman Stadium) in order to watch the Cardinals take on the Royals. Mark and I were regular fans on Friday, so I wore a navy Cardinals hat and a red jersey. We watched the Cards beat the Royals 9-6, and we saw Reggie Sanders and Albert Pujols each hit a homer.

Around 11:00 that evening, we arrived at our hotel in Overland Park, Kansas, which was just a few miles across the state line. We basically hung around the hotel until Saturday afternoon, when Mark and I went to the stadium early in order to see what kind of features we could get for the show.

We set foot on the field well before batting practice started, so we took the opportunity to collect some video footage of the stadium and highlighted different areas, such as the fountains and waterfalls in the outfield. A little bit later, we ran into Reggie Sanders, and he was gracious enough to grant us an interview. Mark and he sat down in the Royals dugout and chatted for a little bit. It went really well!

We hung around on the field for a little while longer, and I was basically just getting all sorts of footage of both the Cardinals and Royals. As game time drew near, we headed up into the press box area, ate supper in the lounge there, and found a couple of seats up in the press box, where we watched Game Two of the series, which the Cardinals would win 4-2. During this game, by the way, Paul and John came as fans, watching the game from seats behind left field.

On Sunday morning, we checked out of our hotel, and Paul and John went to the stadium to tape even more features and to watch the first few innings of the third game of the series. Around 2:15 in the afternoon, Mark and I picked them up from Kauffman Stadium, and we started our four-hour drive back home.

All in all, we had a great time, and it was very productive also. It was the first time any of us had seen the Cardinals on the road, and it was the second time we had visited Kauffman Stadium. The first time was a good eight or 10 years ago, when we saw the Royals and Athletics play.

So I just thank God for a wonderful trip, that He protected us throughout our drives to and from KC, that we were able to get so much done at the stadium, that we were able to just have fun watching the games as fans, and that we were able to meet up with our good friend Maggie. It seems like we crammed so much into the two-plus days that we were there, but we really enjoyed ourselves and also had times where we were able to just be plain lazy at the hotel. :-)

Back from KC

May 21st, 2006

Paul, John, Mark, and I came home this evening after spending the weekend in Kansas City, following the Cardinals on their three-game series against the Royals. We had an absolute blast! The Cardinals swept the series and Albert Pujols hit a home run in each game. We also talked with Reggie Sanders and saw him play a couple of really good games.

This evening, I played volleyball for Paul and Jude’s team. Jude was out of commission due to having his wisdom teeth removed over the weekend, so I subbed for Jude. We won two of three games.

Well, tomorrow we’ve got to get back in the swing of things work-wise. I’m going to get going now, but if I have a chance I would like to write a summary of the weekend’s events in Kansas City. :-)

Live from Kauffman Stadium

May 20th, 2006

Mark and I are sitting in the press box here at Kauffman Stadium as we watch the Cardinals take on the Royals in Game Two of this three-game interleague set. The Cards are up 1-0 right now in the top of the eighth inning. Scott Spiezio is batting with nobody out, and David Eckstein is on first base. It was just announced that tonight’s attendance is 40,516 — a sell-out.

Earlier this afternoon, Mark and I had a chance to catch up with Reggie Sanders, who was on the Cardinals in 2004 and 2005. He came to our Softball Classic in the summer of 2004, and he was certainly one of our favorites. Anyway, Mark sat down with him in the Royals —

We interrupt this to bring you breaking news!

Albert Pujols just hit his 21st home run, a 424-foot three-run shot to centerfield, and the fans are going bananas. If I didn’t know better, I would think that we are in St. Louis. Scott Rolen just followed with a single. Cards are now up 4-0 with nobody out and Rolen on first.

Anyway, Mark’s interview with Reggie went great. Thank God that we were able to run into him again and that he had enough free time to talk. As always, he was very friendly, and the interview went really well. It will probably appear on “Cardinal Country” within a week or two.

Well, time to get back to the game. There’s now one out, Rolen has moved over to second base, and Juan Encarnacion is the batter — oh, wait. They’re intentionally walking him to face So Taguchi.

West to Kansas City

May 19th, 2006

We drove west on I-70 this morning and afternoon, and we ended up in Kansas City. Mark and I dropped Paul and John off at Kauffman Stadium, and then the two of us hit the road again in order to meet up with our good friend Maggie, who is staying at IHOP (International House of Prayer) here in Kansas City. For those unfamiliar, check out www.ihop.org. Anyway, Maggie showed us around for a little while, giving us a tour of the prayer room and the bookstore, and then we parted ways. Mark and I went back to Kauffman, where we parked and got in the stadium in plenty of time to catch the first pitch of the Cardinals/Royals game. The Cards ended up winning 9-6. Albert Pujols hit is 20th homer and former Cardinal Reggie Sanders hit a blast as well.

Well, I’m pretty tired so I’ll just have to write more later. :-)
